The Bilinda Butchers – Regret, Love, Guilt, Dreams

January 20, 2014

Some San Francisco Dream Pop/Shoegaze/easy listening/whatever. The song “Careless Teens” is pretty cool to listen to with headphones on a mostly empty evening train.

Sea Oleena – Sleeplessness

July 15, 2012

Image

Sea Oleena is an absolutely talented artist from Canada. As of writing this it looks like her work is entirely self released and recorded.

On her Bandcamp you’ll find collaborative stuff from her as well that features her gorgeous voice, but her solo work remains to be my favourite.

Pretend – Bones in the Soil, Rust in the Oil

June 21, 2010

It’s got some really jazzy elements to it a la freeform noodling which makes it seem messy at times, but nonetheless it’s darn good. The title track is an extremely impressive work of composition.

Lana Avacada – The Warehouse

June 19, 2010

Okay okay okay if you listen to this and hate this it’s not my fault. This is an official warning: PLEASE DON’T LISTEN TO THE LYRICS. Lana Avacada is a sad case of fucking good music with shit vocals over the top. If you tune out the lyrics then maybe you’ll learn to enjoy The Warehouse as much as I do.

Rooftops – A Forest of Polarity

June 15, 2010

Dear everyone. I’m back.

I know you don’t want to hear what I’ve been up to etc but to say I’ve been busy is an understatement. As a token of my appreciation for your time I want you to fall in love with Rooftops too.

Brilliantly toned math-rock with the most complimentary vocals I’ve ever heard. Every song is crafted so delicately it sends shivers up my spine. Please, for the love of God listen to this.

I Would Set Myself on Fire for You – …Believes in Patterns

May 24, 2010

Probably “one of the greats” among their genre. The viola that they incorporate really distinguishes I Would etc… from any other band. Their legacy continues on in such bands as Dot Flash Line and Optimus Prime.

Cap’n Jazz – Analphabetapolothology

May 23, 2010

One of the greatest Post-Emo bands around. To be honest they’re one of the only Post-Emo bands that I like. The genre seemed to be already really whiny and melodramatic, and as we all know a precursor to MTVEmo. Cap’n Jazz doesn’t sound like twelve years vaging out over ex-girlfriends though. Enjoy their discography.

The Sleepy Trees – Settings

February 23, 2010

I don’t usually like music like this so I started listening with a very critical ear. I’m one of those listeners that judges a whole album by the first song – no, the first NOTES and I’m going to admit I listened through this whole release waiting for a slip up. I’m not going to lie. This is awesome folky stuff.

“Beautifully simplistic collect of tuneful acoustically driven songs. The vocals have a Bright Eyes gene dissected and cross bred with Okkervil River’s gushings of country melody; The Sleepy Trees play full bodied, minimalistic indie folk masterpieces, laden with acoustic flourishes and story-telling goodness.”   –bolachas.org

Chris Rehm – Salivary Stones

February 22, 2010

There’s a lot going on with this cassette release, and it’s all incredible. There’s an honesty here that flows through every genre that’s on this, and there’s no excess of anything. Well paced, well structured and just lovely.

Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago

January 22, 2010

I know this isn’t a hard find, and I know I’m breaking the news a little bit late, but it’s official. Bon Iver is on an indefinite “hiatus.” We all know how those go, amirite? RIP, one of Jeff’s favorite indie rock bands.
