Olafur Arnalds – Living Room Songs

July 16, 2012 by

We’ve featured Olafur before and filed him under “people our age who make us feel shit about ourselves.”

Likely you’ve heard of him if you’ve listened to anyone name drop post rock groups or are into Neo-Classical at all.

This collection of songs was recorded over a period of seven days where he recorded one song in his living room a day. You can hear the floor boards creak if you’re listening closely enough.

This release doesn’t disappoint compared to his previous releases, and he’s probably my favourite composer yet. He’s said he tries, and I think he achieves, bringing classical music to t-shirt and jeans folk. Also, fun fact, he drummed in a Hardcore band “Fighting Shit” before he started composing.

Sea Oleena – Sleeplessness

Sea Oleena is an absolutely talented artist from Canada. As of writing this it looks like her work is entirely self released and recorded.

On her Bandcamp you’ll find collaborative stuff from her as well that features her gorgeous voice, but her solo work remains to be my favourite.

The Debutant Kid – Demo 2010

December 20, 2011 by

The Debutant Kid is a Melbourne Punk outfit. It’s promising and fantastic.

The band is made up of a bunch of Saetia fans. Which is odd. Because they don’t suck like Saetia did.

Pygmy Lush – Old Friends

April 18, 2011 by

I feel as though I’ve grown up with Pygmy Lush. They largely formed out of the ashes of Pg. 99, as many of you know. As a younger teenager I grew up listening to Pg.99, able to equate their raw anger to my bottomless well of teenage angst. Then Pygmy Lush came through with their rough Folk music that I started to listen to more and more as I settled down. Pygmy Lush has really refined their Folk sound in their latest LP. It’s absolutely beautiful.

Heads and Heads – Four Way Split

January 9, 2011 by

Following up on the previous post, I bring you the latest release by Heads and Heads. This is a four way split between Dying in Motion (Switzerland), Heads and Heads (Spain), The Plague Sermon (UK), and Virginia on Duty (Malaysia). It’s a collaboration between several labels including *ahem* mine. Yes, I’m posting my own record on here. I’m having a hard time moving records before I move to Melbourne, cut me some slack.

Transistor Transistor – Transistor Transitor Vs. Wolves Split

January 3, 2011 by

Transistor Transistor and Wolves alike are two very memorable American Screamo bands. Transistor Transistor brings to the table a very abrasive, somewhat Metal inspired sound to the table (in my opinion, better than both of their LP’s). Wolves is possibility one of the best Emo bands the genre has seen during it’s tail end of existence. They broke up in 2004 after a great run of releasing consistently solid records, and having played with such acts as Orchid. Transistor Transistor still remains to this day, albeit they appear to be inactive.

Sirs – Vas Deferens

November 6, 2010 by

New music usually ceases to have an effect on me but a string of tracks such as the ones on this EP is something that I’ve been needing to hear for a while now.

Really posi, upbeat stuff – and think Cap’n Jazz and Algernon Cadwallader.
